Interested in checking out what the multimedia interface screens of the PlayStation Vita will look like when it is finally released? Since most of us don’t have access to one of the consoles now, screenshots of the console in action will have to do. Thanks to the folks over at andriasang.com, they’ve published 9 screen captures of what the Vita’s multimedia interface. For those of you who didn’t get a chance to demo the console at conventions, you’ll be able to tell from the images that Sony is going to make the Vita’s UI more touchscreen centric.

Those of you used to the original PSP UI will probably get used to more convenient features like an onscreen keyboard you can touch type with and buttons you can press by just tapping them with your finger. Let’s not forget things like scrolling, panning etc – it’s all going to be much more convenient with the use of a touchscreen. Check out the full gallery here.

Sony has confirmed that the PS Vita will be region-free, meaning that gamers should be able to import the handheld and games for it from Japan where it will launch first. Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida revealed the spec tidbit on Twitter, though went on to caution against importing. Last week, it was revealed that the PS Vita would go on sale in Japan on December 17, though US availability has been pegged by retailers for only a couple of weeks after that.

“There are people who are interested in importing the Japanese version of PS Vita from outside Japan, but I personally do not recommend that” Yoshida suggested, going on to explain that “from my experience owning both US and [Japanese] game consoles of everything, there tend to be minor nuisances … Like inconsistency between the use of x and o buttons between system software and games.” Pressed by would-be Vita importers to explain, the exec pointed out that “It’s a legacy, but in Japan circle means “yes”, cross means “no”.”

Nonetheless, it’s likely that many will choose to import a PS Vita if the price is right, given Sony is yet to confirm release dates outside of Japan. In Europe, the console is up for pre-order with several retailers, but none are giving specific availability timescales at this point.

Archival Disc

Sony and Panasonic have named the next-generation storage discs that will be the successor to Blu-Ray. They revealed it will be called the Archival Disc. It will eventually hold 1TB of data, the equivalent of 250 DVD films. 300GB versions of the discs will be launched in 2015. They will be aimed at big companies that need to store vast amounts of data. The firms signed an agreement to work on the next-generation storage medium last summer. The first iteration will be a double-sided disc with three layers of data per side with 300GB capacity, it revealed. Current dual-layer Blu-ray discs can store up to 50GB of data. Over time the firms will roll out 500GB and 1TB versions of the disk, a joint statement from the firms said.

Qualcomm’s surprise entry into the smartwatch space is running a bit slow.

083013_TOQ watch headsets black

When the company announced the Toq smartwatch in September, it was aiming to ship the first watches by mid-October. That date has come and gone, but Qualcomm said it still hopes to have products available for the holidays.

Qualcomm didn’t give a specific new date for Toq (pronounced “tock”), but it seems like if it isn’t available by Black Friday, it will be hard to claim it as available for the holidays. In the meantime, both Sony’s SmartWatch 2 and Samsung’s Galaxy Gear (announced the same day as Toq) have started shipping, while Pebble just got a significant software update.

Of course, Qualcomm is using the Toq as much as an expression of what is possible using the company’s Mirasol display and other Qualcomm technologies as it is a product that the company expects to be a big commercial hit.

“We expect to make tens of thousands of these, not hundreds of thousands,” Qualcomm executive Rob Chandhok said in an interview at the time of the announcement. “A success, for us, looks like our partners picking up and running with this. Qualcomm isn’t turning into a consumer electronics company.”

Similar to the other smartwatches, the Toq is designed mainly to serve as a companion to a smartphone, delivering notifications and acting as a remote control. Toq, which is expected to sell for about $300, will work with various Android phones. A key differentiator is the Mirasol screen, which has some of the battery-sipping properties of E Ink while still offering a color display.

ps4 feature

More than one million units of Sony’s latest gaming console, the PlayStation 4, were sold within 24 hours of its Friday debut in the U.S. and Canada.

The company had previously said that about a million of those units were preordered before launch day. The number makes it seem likely that Sony will meet its year-end goal of three million units sold worldwide – a marked contrast from 2006, when manufacturing problems kept a large number of PlayStation 3s out of consumers’ hands.

Some early adopters have reported problems with overheating and TV connectivity, with both problems already receiving derisive nicknames online: The “Red Line of Death” and the “Blue Light of Death,” so-called after the “Red Ring of Death” that plagued early owners of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console.

We’re awaiting comment from a Sony representative reached via email about the hardware glitches. No clear answers to these problems and no estimate of just how many people are affected have yet emerged.

Since Friday, the company line has been that 0.4 percent of the consoles (or 4,000 out of a million) are potentially defective, “which is within our expectations for a new product introduction.”
